Skin infections put more kids in hospital

Serious skin infection rates among children have reached crisis point and a national effort is needed to curb the problem, health researchers say.

An Otago University study, published in the international journal Epidemiology and Infection, has found the rate of children admitted to hospital with severe skin infections nearly doubled between 1990 and 2007, from about 3 to nearly 5.5 per 1000 children.

The rising rates could largely be attributed to increased health inequalities, with more children – especially from Maori and Pacific Island communities – now living in poverty. Overcrowding, poor access to medical care, diet and stress all made minor cuts and grazes more prone to infection.

NZ research links child obesity to mother's diet

Kiwi scientists have helped prove a link between a mother's diet during pregnancy and the risk of childhood obesity.

Auckland University professor Sir Peter Gluckman from the Liggins Institute led the New Zealand arm of a study into the link between a mother's diet and child obesity. The study, led by Southampton University, shows for the first time that a mother's diet during pregnancy can alter the function of her child's DNA and can lead to children having a tendency to "lay down" more fat.

Sir Peter said the study proved the importance of preventive infant health and could help fight the problem of obesity and diabetes in new ways and earlier in life. Read more here listen here and watch here

There are 30 new laptops available for loan at the Tamaki Campus Library. Borrowing them could not be easier. If you have not borrowed a laptop this year, you just need to fill in a short registration form. You only need to do it once each year. The Library staff will issue you with a laptop which you can use for two hours. If you want it for longer, just bring it back to the desk and we will issue it for another two hours. You do not have to stay in the library - just make sure you bring it back after two hours. You can of course connect to the library wireless network.

The high number of fast food outlets near schools is thought to be a factor in the childhood-obesity epidemic sweeping the Western world.

The problem has prompted the Secondary Principals' Association of New Zealand (Spanz) to call for restrictions on what dairies near schools can sell during certain hours.

Obesity causing grave problems

This is a follow up to the post about Pacific Island obesity last month. Obese Pacific Islanders are causing problems when they die. They sometimes require two plots in a cemetery and require bigger coffins. This morning on Morning Report on Radio New Zealand National an embalmer talked about how much harder and more expensive it is to embalm obese people. He also said that obese bodies do not keep as long which caused problems when someone died and family are waiting for other family to arrive from the islands to have the funeral. Sometimes this is not possible or practical.
