Celebrating National Poetry Day

NZ poets read their work. MSS & Archives 2007/9, Special Collections, University of Auckland Library.

Choosing just one item or poet to highlight for National Poetry Day is too difficult so here instead is a selection to illustrate the breadth and depth of poetry-related material in Special Collections.
From original drafts, printers’ proofs, promotional pamphlets and ephemera to literary journals and thousands of poetry books, the material reflects the creative endeavours of multiple generations of New Zealand poets and writers.
Some of the manuscript collections are representative of a life’s work, such as the Kendrick Smithyman papers, while others are mere fragments, such as an inscribed 1968 typescript of Hone Tuwhare’s Rain. New archives keep arriving; for example the tapa notebooks of contemporary poets, including Selina Tusitala Marsh and Robert Sullivan, commissioned by the University of Auckland’s New Zealand Electronic Poetry Centre, which houses its archives with us.
Some 20th Century publications which were important platforms for poets include Tomorrow and Landfall and university magazines such as Auckland’s Phoenix and Kiwi.
But it is hearing poets read their work that is arguably the most rewarding, and many performances are preserved here on cassette tapes, LPs, CDs and DVDs. This includes 36 poets recorded in 1974 for New Zealand poets read their work, 171 poets for the Aotearoa New Zealand Poetry Sound Archive, more recent recordings from the NZEPC and works by Alan Brunton, Sally Rodwell and others among their vast collection
To catch a live poetry reading today, check out one of the many events happening around the country. Our pick is Poetry Central at the Central City Library tonight, which includes the University’s Michelle Leggott, Selina Marsh and Brian Flaherty.
