Elsevier faces protests

Interesting article in a recent issue of The Economist outlining why growing numbers of academic staff and researchers are joining a boycott of Elsevier journals started by a mathematician at Cambridge University.

The boycott includes not submitting papers to Elsevier's journals, or refereeing or editing papers appearing in them. Elsevier publishes over 2,000 journals, including titles such as Cell and the Lancet.

Philson Library closed Friday 25 and Saturday 26 November

The Philson Library will be closed on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 November while library staff and equipment are temporarily relocated as part of the library refurbishment.

Refurbishments will begin 28 November and end by 1 May 2012.

The new entrance to the Philson Library will be from the Boyle Building atrium from Sunday 27 November onwards.

Do you use DynaMed?

DynaMed is an evidence-based point-of-care reference tool providing clinically-organized summaries for more than 3,000 topics.

A recent article in the BMJ compared the speed of updating information in 5 different point-of-care services including DynaMed and UptoDate. The research showed that Dynamed is updated more quickly than the other services.

eTV - watch live streams, recorded programmes and videos

The University is continuing to pilot eTV, a New Zealand Internet TV provider, delivering a range of live channels and recorded content to the education sector.
Content includes:
On Demand - selected pre-recorded programmes from over 30 domestic and international television channels.
Live Streams - 12 predominantly international TV channels including Aljazeera (English), Bloomberg & Triangle Stratos.
Library - an archive of educational TV programmes from educational, government and public service organisations

Information on downloading and adding videos to Powerpoint presentations is also provided.
