The Fine Arts Library has recently subscribed to the music magazine The Wire. This British monthly magazine focuses on avant-garde, improvisational and experimental music with modern classical, hip hop, and electronic music, also discussed. Jon Bywater, a Senior lecturer in Critical Studies at Elam, contributes writing to this publication.
The Elam School of Fine Arts has been long associationed with the creation of both experimental and rock music with Elam sound based artists including Sean Kerr, Clinton Watkins and Leon Narbey. While bands, collectives and inter-media creations, with Elam connections, include From Scratch, Spilt Enz, Suburban Reptiles, The Gladeyes and the Mint Chicks. Andrew Clifford’s podcast recorded during Elam’s 60th Anniversary celebrations provides an entrée into Elam’s rock history.
Mute, to which Bywater again contributes, Escopus and the Leonardo Music Journal (now available online) are other Fine Arts Library serials that focus on music and sound / sonic arts, with many issues accompanied by an audio CD, podcast or mp3.
The two issues of The Wire are shelved in the Fine Arts Library's current serials display.
