Information Commons Software Re-Imaging 2010

IC Software Re-image
Every year, we look at updating the software available on the IC computers. This year, we’d like to hear any ideas or suggestions you have regarding this update: what applications should be made available, any particular updates and changes, and similar.

To refresh your memory, this is what we’ve currently got installed on the IC machines. Information Commons computers are provided to support academic research and learning, not for business, personal or recreational use such as gaming (so please don’t ask us to make World of Warcraft available).

Also, keep in mind that the Faculty/departmental labs provide the specialist software or development environment that students need, while the Information Commons creates a learning environment by providing general productivity software. This means that we’re not looking to make department-specific software available on the IC computers.

Please send us your comments by Friday, 9th October by posting a comment to this blog post. We then look into your suggestions and decide on the new software image.

The new image for 2010 will be rolled out at the start of Semester One 2010.

Thank you all for contributing! This thread is now closed.  Please see the combined response to all student suggestions.

Stop the Adobe Updater from coming up whenever Adobe Acrobat is opened. 9/22/2009 8:00 AM | jaz

I've noticed Remote Desktop is in the start-menu but any attempt to use it to connect to an off-campus computer is blocked. It would be useful if this worked.

I was also thinking of a good alternative to the booking system; one where you swipe your card to join the queue, so that if you are waiting for a computer, the next one to become free is automatically reserved for you (for 1-2 mins). Also the queue getting to a certain size could force those who have been on a computer for several hours to eventually be logged out. 9/22/2009 12:14 PM | David

It would be very convenient if the NumLock would be on by default. At the moment, it's off, so if you switch on the computer and try to log in (and conveniently want to use the numpad for the numbers in your UPI), you always have to activate NumLock first. 9/28/2009 9:09 AM | Juli

I agree on the Adobe Updater thing. It updates the software but can't install so you're left with a little balloon popping up every login. 10/5/2009 7:31 PM | j

A combined response to all student suggestions:

1. Adobe Updater - we'll stop it.

2. Remote Desktop - is only available for other on-campus computers

3. PC Booking System - this is still on our agenda and we are now considering software that also has an auto-queue management system exactly like you’ve suggested, but you login rather than swiping your card. We’ll keep you posted on the PC Booking System progress.

4. NOD32 – yes it does work

5. NumLock – it is on by default, please advise which specific machine you were using where this was not the case and we’ll fix this.

6. Sebilius 5 – this is department-specific software so will not be available on IC Computers. This software is already available in the NICAI Faculty Computing Laboratories located in rooms 521, 523 and 526, on level 5 of 26 Symonds St (building 421) on the City Campus. A helpdesk is available during lab hours – 9am-6pm, Monday to Friday during semester, please enquire there.
