Kate Edger Information Commons Study Break/Exams Opening Hours

Believe it or not, Semester 2 exams are almost upon all of us!

The good news is that, The Kate Edger Information Commons will have extended opening hours from 8:00am to 12:00 midnight on Saturdays and Sundays for the following dates during the exam period:

Saturday 24 October / Sunday 25 October
Saturday 31 October / Sunday 01 November
Saturday 07 November / Sunday 08 November
Saturday 14 November / Sunday 15 November

Normal opening hours still applied for Mon-Fri (7am - 12 am)

Please note: Students will be asked to vacate the Kate Edger Information Commons 15 minutes prior to the advertised closing time to ensure closing procedures are completed and that the building is locked down on time. Printers, photocopiers and scanners will also be shut down at the same time. Students' cooperation is always much appreciated.

Report any broken IC PCs and keyboards!

Information Commons Software Re-Imaging 2010

Every year, we look at updating the software available on the IC computers. This year, we’d like to hear any ideas or suggestions you have regarding this update: what applications should be made available, any particular updates and changes, and similar.

To refresh your memory, this is what we’ve currently got installed on the IC machines. Information Commons computers are provided to support academic research and learning, not for business, personal or recreational use such as gaming (so please don’t ask us to make World of Warcraft available).

Also, keep in mind that the Faculty/departmental labs provide the specialist software or development environment that students need, while the Information Commons creates a learning environment by providing general productivity software. This means that we’re not looking to make department-specific software available on the IC computers.

Please send us your comments by Friday, 9th October by posting a comment to this blog post. We then look into your suggestions and decide on the new software image.

The new image for 2010 will be rolled out at the start of Semester One 2010.

NEW trial laptops now available

Spring is here and so are two DELL NetBooks!

The NetBooks are about half the size and weight of the current laptop model we have. We want to find out if you like them as we are seeking to replace all our current laptops.

We will be issuing these laptops to you from today on. As these laptops are trial laptops, we would appreciate if you could answer some questions about your impression on the laptops when you used one of them (staff will be handing out a short questionnaire to you).

You are more than welcome to leave comments on this blog post as well; let us know what you think about the new laptops. Do you prefer the bigger or the smaller laptops? Why do you think one size is more practical than the other?
