Based on the best-selling and multi-award-winning (including the Guardian First Book Award, Whitbread First Novel Award, and Commonwealth Writers Prize) 2000 novel by Zadie Smith, White Teeth is an examination of the culturally and ethnically diverse London.
The four episode series consists of four self-contained short-stories, concentrating on one character from the novel, with background cameos from people in previous weeks. The outstanding cast includes Geraldine James, James McAvoy, Om Puri, Naomie Harris, and more.
Originally shown on Channel 4 in 2002, the series could not be released for 8 years because of copyright issues with the various tracks used in the film. The unceasing use of popular music of the time, including T. Rex, Cockney Rebel, and Slade, “occasionally make the project feel like a soundtrack album that has had a drama based on it” (Lawson, 2002).
