On the occasion of his 80th birthday, The University of Auckland Library presents a display of aspects of Emeritus Professor Nicholas Tarling’s academic achievements, including his contribution to the study of history, especially the history of Southeast Asia. He is the author of over 40 books on politics, history, education, student welfare and the arts. To mark his 80th birthday he will publish his second volume of memoirs Eighty years on.
The display also showcases Nicholas Tarling's contribution to the Arts as Actor, Director, Producer, Broadcaster, Reviewer, Arts administrator, Opera expert and tour leader.

Nicholas Tarling earned his PhD at Cambridge and in 1957 he took up a teaching post at The University of Queensland, in the Department of History and Political Science. In 1965 he was appointed Associate Professor of History at The University of Auckland. For much of his time, until his retirement in 1997, he was also Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Assistant or Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He was awarded the Cambridge Litt.D in 1974 and given an honorary Litt. D by The University of Auckland in 1996. He is a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM). Currently Nicholas is a Fellow of the New Zealand Asia Institute.
